When Your Arm Won’t Do What You Need It To

Pain in your shoulder, arm, or hand can make everyday life surprisingly difficult. Reaching for something on a shelf, carrying a bag, typing at your desk, even getting dressed — things you never used to think about suddenly become a source of frustration and discomfort.

Maybe the pain crept in gradually and you’ve been working around it for months. Or perhaps it came on suddenly and you’re worried about what it means. Either way, you don’t have to keep adapting your life around it.

Do Any of These Apply to You?

Shoulder, arm, and hand pain shows up in many different ways. You might recognise some of these:

Trouble reaching up

— putting on a coat or reaching a cupboard feels impossible?

Your grip is affected

— you keep dropping things or can’t hold on properly?

Numbness or tingling in your arm

That’s making you worry?

Pain travelling up into your neck

— you’re not sure where it starts or ends?

Tender to touch

— even light pressure on your shoulder or arm is uncomfortable?

Pain in your elbow

That flares up when you grip, twist, or lift?

Muscle tension or spasm

In your shoulder or upper arm that won’t let go?

If any of these sound familiar, you’re in the right place. These are some of the most common things we hear from patients — and most of them wish they’d come to us sooner.

What Causes Shoulder, Arm & Hand Pain?

Pain anywhere in the upper limb can have many different causes, and often there isn’t one simple explanation. The shoulder, arm, and hand are connected through a complex chain of joints, muscles, nerves, and tendons — so a problem in one area frequently affects another.

The important thing to know is that pain doesn’t necessarily mean something serious is wrong — but it does mean your body is asking for attention. Some of the specific conditions linked to upper limb pain include:

  • Tendonitis — inflammation or degeneration of a tendon from overuse or strain
  • Frozen Shoulder — progressive stiffness and pain that restricts your range of movement
  • Bursitis — inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs that cushion your joints
  • RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury) — pain from repeated movements, common in desk workers
  • Tennis Elbow — pain on the outside of the elbow from overloaded forearm tendons

Accurate diagnosis is the first step. Once we know what’s driving your pain, we can treat the cause — not just manage the symptoms.
